From the Fragment to the Whole

I am really excited to announce that Peace of Glass will work in collaboration with Coin Street Neighbourhood Centre to provide the facilities for the new glass workshops “From the Fragment to the Whole’, a project that I run as part of my fine art practice Roberta De Caro Art.

The material qualities of glass can be a powerful metaphor for the experience of surviving domestic abuse. This series of workshops is an opportunity for survivors of domestic abuse to create glass artwork by fusing together pieces of broken glass. Through hands-on activities and engagement with materials, the participants will work in small groups to create objects that mirror the process of rebuilding and healing the fragmented self. In the ancient Japanese tradition of Kintsugi, the art of fixing broken pottery with gold lacquer, the signs of breakage are to be celebrated as part of the history of the object, instead of being hidden and disguised. In the same way the scars of the past are to be valued as evidence of the personal strength and endurance of survivors of domestic abuse.
